Astro 250 - project ideas / guidelines
You should have clear your project topic with me by Monday, April 21.
The project is a small portion of your grade (5%) but should be taken
seriously. It is a chance to exand a bit away from the syllabus and see how
you can use what we've learned in class in a broader way.
What you hand in will of course depend on what you choose to do. I really don't like
term papers, so figure out a way to convey what you've done some other way - i.e.
a video, web-based presentation, audio, ...
Projects are due on the last day of class, May 2.
Some ideas to consider include:
- Critique the accuracy of a recent news article about an
astronomical topic. Please pick an article from a newspaper or news magazine
(not a science mag like Discover).
- Critique a television show episode or motion picture (presumably
science fiction) that has astronomical content. What did they get right?
What did they get wrong? What did they need to get wrong to make the plot
work?
- Creative endeavors are encouraged - short stories, poems, artwork,
etc. that is somehow tied to Astro 250 material AND as technically
accurate as feasible.
- Register for, and participate in, an astronomy related
Zooniverse
project, and report on your activity and impressions. For example:
